About the Business

Happy Villa Building & Construction Pty Ltd is a painting business based in Carnegie, in Melbourne’s south-east, delivering painting and decorating work on building and construction projects. Its work covers the full scope of the trade: setting up and protecting each site, stripping and preparing surfaces, repairing defects in walls, woodwork and masonry, matching and mixing colours, selecting the right coating for the environment, applying paint, stain, varnish and specialty finishes by brush, roller and spray, and hanging wallpaper and wall coverings, with minor glazing and tiling repairs carried out where a job calls for them. The business works alongside other construction trades on site and places real weight on careful preparation, safe work practices, including the correct handling of lead-based paint and other hazardous materials, sustainable disposal of waste, and clear, practical advice to customers on colour choices and costs. It is a hands-on, quality-focused workplace where tradespeople are trusted to run their own sites and deliver a clean, durable finish on every job.

About the Position

The Painting Trades Worker carries each job from first set-up to final clean-down and is central to the business’s day-to-day output and reputation with its customers. The role takes responsibility for safe access and site protection, thorough surface preparation, accurate colour matching and coating selection, and a high standard of application across interior and exterior work, while coordinating with the other trades on site so that painting fits cleanly into the build programme. It also carries the customer-facing side of the trade, advising on colour choices and estimating the materials and time each job will need, and so calls for a tradesperson who combines sound technical skill with reliability, good judgement and a genuine pride in the finished result.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up each site safely, erecting and working from scaffolding, ladders and working-at-height platforms, and protect floors, furniture and fixtures with drop sheets, plastic sheeting and masking tape.
  • Strip peeling paint, flaking coatings and old wallpaper using scrapers, sanders or chemical strippers.
  • Fill holes, cracks and dents with fillers or putties and sand surfaces smooth, ready for coating.
  • Carry out minor repairs to wooden and metal frames and seal porous surfaces with primers and undercoats.
  • Identify lead-based paint and other hazardous materials and treat them safely in accordance with safety laws.
  • Match and mix colours, combining pigments, oils, thinners and drying additives to meet exact colour and texture specifications.
  • Select the appropriate coating for each environment, including water-based, oil-based, epoxy and anti-corrosive paints.
  • Apply paint, stain, varnish and specialty finishes using brushes, rollers and spray equipment, including back-rolling sprayed ceilings.
  • Measure, cut, pattern-match and paste wallpaper and wall coverings.
  • Occasionally repair windows, replace glass in frames, and lay or repair basic wall and floor tiles where a job requires it.
  • Clean brushes, rollers, spray guns and equipment at the end of each job and dispose of waste using sustainable methods.
  • Advise customers on colour choices, estimate material and time costs, and coordinate with other construction trades on site.

Requirements

  • Australian citizens and permanent residents are encouraged to apply.
  • Certificate III in Painting and Decorating.
  • At least one year of experience in painting and decorating work.
  • Proficiency with brush, roller and spray application, including back-rolling sprayed surfaces; sound knowledge of surface preparation, fillers, primers and undercoats; the ability to select coatings for interior, exterior and corrosive environments; competent colour matching and mixing; wallpaper hanging; safe work at heights; safe handling of lead-based paint and hazardous materials; and the ability to estimate materials and time accurately.
  • Clear communication with customers and other trades, reliability and the ability to work unsupervised on site, close attention to detail and pride in the finish, the physical fitness the trade demands, and availability for full-time hours.
